About Gate to City

What this site does

Gate to City answers one question: you have arrived at an airport or a cruise port, so what is the best way to the city centre? Each page puts every option in the same table, with the same fields, and gives a verdict that changes with the number of people, the luggage and the arrival time.

Where the numbers come from

Public transport fares, first and last departures and frequencies are taken from the operator's own website. Fixed taxi fares come from the city or the airport that regulates them. Where a taxi runs on the meter we give a range and label it as an estimate. Prices for pre-booked cars are typical starting prices for a standard vehicle and are also labelled as estimates.

Every table shows the date it was last checked, and every option with a published fare links to its source, so you can confirm the figure yourself before you travel.

How the verdict is calculated

For each option we take the total cost for your group and add a value for the door-to-door time of each traveller. Options that are awkward with suitcases get a small penalty when you carry luggage, and options that are not running at your arrival time are removed. The option with the lowest result becomes our pick. The cheapest and the fastest options are always labelled too, so you can overrule us.

What decides the order of the table

The order depends only on cost, journey time, luggage and arrival time. Whether an option can be booked on this site plays no part: metro, bus and train options are listed in full, and when public transport is the better choice the verdict says so.
