Livorno Port to Florence: train, shuttle, taxi compared
Livorno is the port sold as Florence and Pisa, and Florence is about 92 km away. The cheap route is a port shuttle or a walk to the city centre, a city bus to Livorno Centrale and a regional train to Santa Maria Novella, 12.80 to 19.80 euros one way and around two and a half hours. A taxi or car halves the time but costs 130 to 240 euros each way, and a day call lives or dies on the last train back.

From the port the centre is a walk, and the port operator says Livorno Centrale is reached by bus to Piazza Grande, about 10 minutes on foot from the Maritime Station. Take the city bus to the station (line 1 is the usual route, about 15 minutes), using the 2.00 euro urban ticket bought before boarding. The regional train to Firenze SMN costs 10.80 euros in second class and takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. The Maritime Station is close only to the nearest quays, so from a far berth use the shuttle instead.

Porto di Livorno 2000 runs a shuttle bus to the town for as long as your ship is alongside. Some cruises include it, and a listing for an excursion coach quotes 7 euros per person otherwise, so treat the price as an estimate. The shuttle takes about 10 minutes to Via Claudio Cogorano in the centre. From there take the city bus to Livorno Centrale (2.00 euros), then the regional train to Firenze SMN (10.80 euros). The total is 19.80 euros with the shuttle and 12.80 without it.

Livorno taxis use the meter, starting at 3.50 euros plus 1.40 euros per kilometre, with no fixed fare to Florence. At 92 km that comes to about 130 euros before supplements, and guides quote up to roughly 170 euros one way, so the figure is an estimate. The drive takes about 1 hour 25 minutes on the Florence to Pisa to Livorno road. Agree a total with the driver before you leave, and for the return book a time rather than rely on finding a cab.

A pre-booked sedan from the port to Florence starts at about 240 euros for up to three passengers, and the driver can wait or return at a time you set. The drive is about 90 minutes. For a day call it is the only option that lets you set the return time, so you can decide when to leave Florence without a timetable.
The same trip in a different situation
Arriving late at night
Work back from the all-aboard time on your cruise app, not from sailing. On a weekday timetable the direct trains from Florence leave at 13:28, 15:28, 17:00 and 17:38, reaching Livorno Centrale at 14:48, 16:48, 18:11 and 19:12. From the station a taxi to the port is about 10 minutes and roughly 20 to 30 euros. For a 17:30 all-aboard, the 15:28 is the last train that really works, and the 13:28 is the safe one. There are later direct trains at 21:28, 21:57 and 23:07, and on pre-holiday days at 19:53, but they are too late for a normal day call. Trains via Pisa run more often, so check Trenitalia on the day.
See the comparison →4 people, 4 suitcasesTravelling as a group of four
Four people on the walk, bus and train route pay 51.20 euros one way, or about 102 euros for a day call. With the shuttle it is 79.20 euros one way. A taxi at 130 to 170 euros is 33 to 43 euros each one way and double for the return, and a sedan carries three, not four. A shared excursion coach, sold as a return ticket at about 39 euros per person plus the shuttle, costs about 156 euros for four, but it has fixed times that you do not control. The train is cheapest, the taxi or car is quickest, and for four people the taxi is the one that comes close.

- Ask your cruise line which berth you use. Distances to Piazza Grande and the shuttle stop differ a lot between quays.
- A day call by train is about 2 hours 30 minutes each way, so five hours of travel against a call of 8 to 10 hours. Check the arrival time on your itinerary first.
- All trains to Florence pass through Pisa. Livorno Centrale to Pisa Centrale takes 15 to 20 minutes and costs about 3 euros, so a Pisa stop is an easy change.
- Buy and validate your regional ticket before boarding. On-board regularisation costs a 5 euro surcharge, and fines apply for travelling without a ticket.
- If your train is not direct, the usual change is at Pisa Centrale. Read the departure board at Livorno Centrale for the platform.
- Some cruise lines sell their own coach to Florence. A shared coach costs about 39 euros per person return, the drive takes about 1 hour 30 minutes and the departure and return times are fixed.
