Buy a Navegante occasional card (EUR 0.50) at the machines and load a Carris/Metro single (EUR 1.90) onto it, so 2.40 euros the first time. The single is valid for one hour and covers the change, but allows only one entry to the metro. A contactless bank card also opens the gates at 1.92 euros per trip, one person per card. Ride the Red line toward São Sebastião to Alameda, change to the Green line toward Cais do Sodré and get off at Rossio. Red line to São Sebastião and the Blue line to Restauradores also works and ends 3 minutes from Rossio. The change at Alameda means stairs or escalators with your cases.

The 759 runs from Estação Oriente through Olivais and Xabregas to Santa Apolónia, Alfândega and Praça do Comércio, then to Rossio and Restauradores. Pay the driver 2.30 euros in cash, by card or with MB Way, or tap a loaded Navegante card. A ticket bought on board is valid only on that bus. It is an ordinary city bus with limited luggage room and takes well over 30 minutes, so it suits a light bag and a hotel by the river better than a quick trip to Baixa. Check the last departure at the stop, as the timetable changed on 6 October.

Urban tickets are priced by zone. The CP fare list for 2026 shows 1.50 euros for one zone and 1.85 euros for two, and we could not confirm which applies between these two stations, so 1.85 euros is the safe figure. The ride takes under 10 minutes. Santa Apolónia is the right stop for Alfama or the cruise terminal. For Baixa, change there to the Blue line metro, which adds a metro ticket, or take a 25 to 30 minute walk along the river.

Until 13 October 2026 the old meter applies, with a 1.60 euro luggage supplement. A trip to Rossio usually comes to 11 to 16 euros depending on traffic. The new national tariff starts on 14 October 2026: the flag fall drops from 3.25 to 2.00 euros and the luggage supplement is scrapped. The fixed airport fares that start on 15 October apply only to trips leaving the airport, not to Oriente. Check that the meter is running and ask for a receipt.

Arriving late at night
The metro closes at 01:00 and you must be through the gates by then, so a train arriving near 00:30 leaves very little time to reach the platform and change at Alameda. Bus 759 runs into the late evening but check the last departure at the stop. After that a taxi or a ride-hailing car is the dependable choice. The CP urban train to Santa Apolónia thins out late, so confirm the last departure on the CP site before you rely on it.
See the comparison →4 people, 4 suitcasesTravelling as a group of four
Four people on the metro pay 9.60 euros the first time, or 7.68 euros if each taps a contactless bank card, plus the change at Alameda with four cases. Four on bus 759 pay 9.20 euros. A single taxi at roughly 11 to 16 euros takes four people and the luggage to the door. It is a few euros more than the tickets, and saves the stairs. For three or four people with cases the taxi is the sensible choice from Oriente.

- The station has three levels. The metro is on the lowest, buses are in the middle with the waiting rooms and the entrance to the Vasco da Gama shopping centre, and the trains are on top.
- Left-luggage lockers are inside the intermodal station next to the police post. They follow the station's opening hours, so confirm before a late arrival.
- Alfa Pendular and intercity trains also stop at Santa Apolónia, which is closer to Baixa and Alfama. If your ticket gives a choice, check which station is nearer your hotel.
- A new national taxi tariff takes effect on 14 October 2026. The luggage supplement goes, and the flag fall drops to 2.00 euros.
- Keep your Navegante card. It lasts a year and you can reload it for the metro, Carris buses and the airport run.
- The Carris/Metro single is valid for one hour. You may switch between metro and bus within that time, but only enter the metro once.
