Heathrow to Southampton cruise port: coach, train, taxi
Southampton is about 100 km from Heathrow, and every public option stops short of the ship, either at the coach station or at Southampton Central, so you need a short taxi at the end. The coach is the cheapest, a RailAir coach and train via Woking avoids central London, and a car is the easiest with cruise luggage. Leave plenty of margin, because the ship will not wait.

Every option in detail
BusNational Express 032 to Southampton
- £17.40
- 2 h 30 min
- 01:10–23:50
- → Southampton Coach Station, then taxi to the terminal
National Express lists fares from 17.40 pounds one way, with a fastest journey of 1 hour 25 minutes from Terminal 5. Route 032 runs up to 14 times a day, with a first departure from Heathrow Central Bus Station at 01:10 and a last at 23:50. The coach stops at Heathrow Terminal 5, Winchester Park and Ride East and the University of Southampton before the coach station. From there taxis wait outside, and the terminals are 1.5 to 2 miles from the rail station, a 5 to 10 minute taxi. Allow about 2 hours 30 minutes door to door. Luggage is one large suitcase and one hand bag, which is tight for a cruise.
TrainRailAir coach to Woking, then train to Southampton
- £27.50 (estimate)
- 2 h 40 min
- → Southampton Central, then taxi to the terminal
The RA2 coach runs from Heathrow to Woking station in about 50 minutes from Terminal 3, with a first departure at 03:50 and a last at 00:18 on weekdays. From Woking, South Western Railway trains run direct to Southampton Central in roughly 50 to 65 minutes. RailAir's online fare for Woking was 11 pounds in the notice we found, and the train adds around 16 pounds, so we show 27.50 pounds as an estimate. We could not confirm the train fare on an official page, and Advance tickets can start much lower. Add a 5 to 10 minute taxi from Southampton Central to your terminal. Check the last train from Woking on the day, because the final trains thin out in the late evening.
TrainRail via central London to Waterloo
- £72.50
- 2 h 45 min
- 05:36–21:06
- → Southampton Central, then taxi to the terminal
Take the Elizabeth line to Tottenham Court Road, the Northern line to Waterloo, then a South Western Railway train to Southampton Central. The TfL fare to Waterloo is 15.50 pounds, and a Southampton to Waterloo Anytime Day Single was 57 pounds on the day we checked, so 72.50 pounds in total, with Advance fares much cheaper. TfL's planner shows 136 to 141 minutes to Southampton Central. First weekday departure from Heathrow is around 05:36 and the last without a replacement bus section about 21:06. You change twice with cases and take a Tube escalator, so it suits light packers only. Add a taxi to the terminal.
TaxiTaxi
- £190–£260 per vehicle (estimate)

- → Your cruise terminal in Southampton
For about 100 km, expect roughly 190 to 260 pounds, which is our estimate and not a published tariff. Agree a price before you leave, as not every driver will take a job this long. A fixed-price listing for the same route shows 180 pounds for a saloon, which is usually the better deal. Allow about 1 hour 45 minutes without traffic. The driver can drop you at your terminal door.
Private carPre-booked private car
- £180 per vehicle (estimate)
- 1 h 45 min
- 24 hours
- → Your cruise terminal door
A standard saloon starts at about 180 pounds on the listing we checked, with executive cars from about 229 pounds. The listing counts four passengers with two suitcases, so for three people with cruise cases ask for a larger vehicle. The price is fixed, and the driver tracks your flight. Book at least a day ahead and give your terminal name, since Southampton has five.

Arriving late at night
National Express 032 leaves Heathrow Central Bus Station until 23:50, and another service leaves at 01:40 according to TfL's planner, so a late flight can still get a coach. Coaches arrive at Southampton Coach Station from about 03:00. Rail from Heathrow stops being practical at around 21:00, and later journeys use a replacement bus on the day we checked. After that a taxi or pre-booked car is the answer, and a car at about 180 pounds runs all night. Embarkation is a daytime event, so a late arrival normally means a hotel and an early start.
See the comparison →4 people, 4 suitcasesTravelling as a group of four
Four people on the coach pay 69.60 pounds plus a taxi from the coach station. Four on the train via Waterloo pay 290 pounds at the walk-up fare. The RailAir route at about 27.50 pounds each is 110 pounds for four plus taxi. A car at about 180 pounds is 45 pounds each for four, but a standard saloon fits three with cruise cases, and a larger vehicle costs more. For three people with large cases, the car is the sensible option.
See the comparison →Practical tips
- Embarkation margin: most lines close check-in about 90 minutes before sailing, and your boarding pass shows your own time. Aim to land at least five hours before check-in closes, which is about six and a half hours before sailing. That is our guidance, as lines set their own cut-off times.
- A flight on the morning of embarkation can work, but a delay with a coach or train on the M3 or the A33 has no fallback. Flying in the day before removes the risk.
- Southampton has five cruise terminals, so confirm yours first. The railway station is about 1.5 to 2 miles from most terminals, and a taxi takes 5 to 10 minutes.
- The coach station has a free bus every 15 minutes to the railway station, according to National Express, and taxis wait outside.
- Book a private car for the time you leave the airport, not the flight time, and say how many large cases you have.
- On the way back to Heathrow on disembarkation day, ships usually dock early morning and you leave between about 07:00 and 10:00. Book transport for your own slot.
