Venice Airport to Venice: bus, boat and taxi compared
Venice has two ways in, by road to Piazzale Roma or by water to the landing stages. The road options take 20 to 25 minutes and cost 10 to 12 euros on a bus or a fixed 40 euros in a taxi. The boats are slower, 57 to 85 minutes, but put you on the canal. Cars stop at Piazzale Roma, so every land journey ends with a walk or a vaporetto to your hotel.

BusATVO Venice Express coach
- €12
- 45 min
- 06:00–01:10
- → Piazzale Roma (road reference)
The coach takes about 20 minutes and runs from 06:00 to 01:10 from the airport, every day. The single is 12 euros and the return 20 euros, with luggage included. Buy at the ATVO machines in the baggage hall, at the ATVO office in arrivals (open 08:00 to 23:45), at the machines at the stops or online. Piazzale Roma is the last stop, next to the ATVO ticket office and a short walk from the Santa Lucia station.
BusACTV bus 5 (Aerobus)
- €10
- 40 min
- 04:08–01:10
- → Piazzale Roma, lane A1 (road reference)
Official ACTV fares are 10 euros single and 18 euros return, valid for 75 minutes. The ride takes about 24 minutes to Piazzale Roma. On weekdays buses leave every 15 minutes from 06:55 to 20:55 and about every 30 minutes outside those hours, with the first at 04:08 and the last at 01:10. At weekends the daytime gap is 20 minutes. The Aerobus plus 90-minute ticket is 18 euros and adds unlimited vaporetto rides, which suits you if your hotel is on a vaporetto line.
BusAlilaguna Blue Line water bus
- €18
- 1 h 50 min
- 05:20–00:20
- → San Marco Giardinetti (water reference)
The single is 18 euros and the return 32 euros, with one large bag and one hand bag included and 4 euros for each extra bag. The Blue Line leaves at 05:20 and 06:20, then hourly to 08:20, then every 30 minutes until 22:20, with the last boat at 00:20. It calls at Murano and Lido first, so San Marco takes about 85 minutes. The Orange Line is faster to the Grand Canal (Rialto in 57 minutes, Santa Maria del Giglio in 73) but runs only from 08:35 to 23:05. The timetable is valid to 28 October 2026.
TaxiLand taxi, fixed fare
- €40 per vehicle
- 30 min
- 24 hours
- → Piazzale Roma (road reference)
The airport to Piazzale Roma fare is fixed at 40 euros for the car, not per person, and you can pay by card. Ask the driver to apply the fixed fare before you set off. Late night, public holiday and extra luggage supplements can apply. The drive takes about 20 minutes. Taxis cannot enter the historic centre, so you finish at Piazzale Roma and walk or take a vaporetto from there.
TaxiPrivate water taxi

- → Your hotel or the nearest canal landing (water reference)
The city sets water taxi tariffs but does not publish a simple airport figure online, so treat the price as an estimate. Booking sites and guides quote about 130 euros upward and up to roughly 200 euros, for the whole boat with up to four people. The trip takes 25 to 40 minutes. It is the only option that can drop you at a hotel with a canal door. Agree the total, the number of bags and any night surcharge before you step aboard.
Private carPre-booked private car
- €60 per vehicle (estimate)
- 35 min
- 24 hours
- → Piazzale Roma (road reference)
A pre-booked sedan to Piazzale Roma starts at about 60 euros for up to three passengers, with the driver tracking your flight. It costs more than the 40 euro rank taxi, so it only makes sense if you want the certainty of a named driver and a fixed price. The car stops at Piazzale Roma like every other road vehicle.
The same trip in a different situation
Arriving late at night
Arriving at 00:30 you still have options. The ACTV bus 5 leaves at 00:40 and 01:10, and the ATVO coach has a 01:10 departure. The last Alilaguna Blue Line boat left at 00:20, and the Orange Line stops at 23:05, so after that there are no scheduled boats from the airport. Land taxis run all night, with a night supplement on top of the 40 euro fare. Vaporetto services thin out late at night, so a hotel on the water can be hard to reach from Piazzale Roma without a water taxi.
See the comparison →4 people, 4 suitcasesTravelling as a group of four
For four people the land taxi at 40 euros costs the same as four ACTV tickets (40 euros), and less than four ATVO coach tickets (48 euros) or four Alilaguna tickets (72 euros). It also saves queuing at a stop with luggage. A water taxi at about 130 to 200 euros works out at 33 to 50 euros each and takes you to the hotel door if it sits on a canal. For one or two travellers the 10 euro ACTV bus is the cheapest way to Piazzale Roma.
See the comparison →Practical tips
- ATVO buses and the ACTV bus both end at Piazzale Roma. For the Rialto or San Marco you still need a vaporetto, which is a separate 9.50 euro ticket unless you buy the 18 euro Aerobus plus 90-minute combination.
- ACTV allows three bags free. ATVO coaches carry unlimited luggage at no extra charge.
- The Alilaguna dock is a walk of about 10 minutes on a covered moving walkway from arrivals. It is not a short hop with heavy cases.
- Do not accept a ride from touts in the arrivals hall. Use the taxi rank or a pre-booked car, and ask for the 40 euro fixed fare to Piazzale Roma.
- Check which side of Venice your hotel is on before choosing. The Blue Line stops at San Marco and Santa Lucia, and the Orange Line at Rialto and Santa Maria del Giglio.
- Treviso airport is a separate arrival point. Do not confuse the two when you book a transfer.
