4 people, 4 suitcases

Fiumicino (FCO): the best way to central Rome for four people

For four people with luggage the numbers are close. Four Leonardo Express singles come to 56 euros, but the Minigruppi ticket gives four adults the same train for 40 euros if bought in one transaction. Four bus tickets cost 28 euros. The taxi is 55 euros for the whole car, about 14 euros each, and takes you to the door with no stairs or platform changes. A private sedan seats three, so a group of four needs a larger car or a taxi.

Every option in detail

Train

Leonardo Express

  • €14
  • 50 min
  • 05:38–23:53
  • → Roma Termini, platforms 23 and 24

Buy at the Trenitalia self-service machines or the ticket office (open 06:45 to 22:12), on trenitalia.com or by tapping a contactless card at the Leonardo gate. Validate a paper ticket at the turnstile before you board, and keep it, because the gates at Termini check it again on the way out. Metrebus integrated tickets are not accepted on this train. The ride takes 32 minutes.

Train

FL1 regional train

  • €8
  • 80 min
  • 05:57–23:27
  • → Roma Ostiense, Trastevere or Tiburtina (not Termini)

A single costs 8 euros and is sold at the same machines. FL1 does not stop at Termini. To reach it, change to metro B at Piramide (a short walk from Ostiense) or at Tiburtina, with a 1.50 euro ATAC ticket on top. It is a stopping commuter train and gets crowded at rush hour, so it only makes sense if your hotel is near Trastevere, Ostiense or Tiburtina.

Bus

TAM bus

  • €7
  • 75 min
  • 24 hours
  • → Via Giolitti, beside Termini

The lowest online fare is 7 euros; on the day the single from the desk at stall 17 is 9 euros, so buy online. Luggage travels free. On 4 October the airport board shows departures at 00:15, 01:30, 02:30, 03:00, 03:30 and 04:30 as well as the daytime service, which makes it the most useful bus for late flights.

Bus

SIT Bus Shuttle

  • €7
  • 80 min
  • 07:15–01:15
  • → Via Marsala, by Termini

One way is 7 euros; SIT's site adds 2 euros to tickets bought at the stop, so book online. The bus calls at Via Aurelia and Roma Vaticano before Termini, which suits a hotel on the Vatican side. On 4 October the first departure is 07:15 and the last is 01:15 after midnight, with extra runs at 23:50, 00:15 and 00:40.

Taxi

Official taxi

  • €55 per vehicle
  • 50 min
  • 24 hours
  • → Any address inside the Aurelian Walls

The fare is fixed at 55 euros per ride, not per person, and includes all supplements. It applies in both directions. Take only a white taxi with a TAXI roof sign from the rank, because drivers who approach you in the arrivals hall are not licensed and can charge anything. Outside the walls but inside the ring road there is no fixed fare and the meter is capped at 80 euros.

Private car

Pre-booked private car

  • €65 per vehicle (estimate)
  • 55 min
  • 24 hours
  • → Your hotel door

A pre-booked sedan for up to three passengers starts at about 65 euros in the daytime and about 78 euros between 21:00 and 06:00. The driver tracks your flight, so a delay does not change the price. It costs about 10 euros more than the taxi, which buys you a named driver and no queue.
