Roma Termini to the centre: metro, bus, taxi, walk

Termini is about 2.5 km from the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, and nothing goes there in a straight line. The metro is the cheapest at 1.50 euros but drops you 15 to 20 minutes' walk away, bus 40 Express gets closest, and a taxi is a metered 9 to 13 euros. With one small bag it is a decent walk, but with a large case a taxi or the bus is easier.

Every option in detail

On foot

Walk

  • €0
  • 35 min
  • 24 hours
  • → Pantheon, via Via Nazionale and Via del Corso

Leave by the main front exit, cross Piazza dei Cinquecento and take Via Nazionale downhill to Piazza Venezia, then Via del Corso and the side streets to the Pantheon. It is about 30 minutes with a day bag and 35 with a wheeled case, because the last stretch is cobbled. Via Nazionale is wide and flat enough for a suitcase. The route is straightforward in daylight and fine at night, but it is not the one to choose in rain or heat.

Metro

Metro A or B

  • €1.50
  • 35 min
  • 05:30–23:30
  • → Barberini, Spagna (A) or Colosseo (B), then on foot

A single costs 1.50 euros and is valid for 100 minutes on buses and trams as well. You can buy it at the machines or tap a contactless bank card at the gate. Line A takes you to Barberini in two stops or Spagna in three, and it is a 15 to 20 minute walk from either to the Pantheon. Line B reaches Colosseo in two stops. Lines run from 05:30 to 23:30 Sunday to Thursday and until 01:30 on Friday and Saturday nights. Stairs and crowds make it hard with big cases.

Bus

Bus 40 Express and 64

  • €1.50
  • 40 min
  • → Largo Argentina, about 400 m from the Pantheon

Both lines run along Via Nazionale, Piazza Venezia and Corso Vittorio Emanuele and are the classic buses into the old centre. Lines 40 and 64 are among the most crowded and the most targeted by pickpockets in Rome, so keep zips closed and bags in front of you. Metro C works at Piazza Venezia have moved some stops, and the 40 Express has been stopping about 150 m from the old Largo Argentina stop. Check the stop name on the board before you get off. Buy the 1.50 euro ticket before boarding and validate it.

Taxi

Official taxi

  • €9–€13 per vehicle (estimate)
  • 25 min
  • 24 hours
  • → Any address in the centre

There is no fixed fare inside the walls, so the meter decides. It starts at 3.50 euros on weekdays (5.00 on Saturdays and holidays, 7.50 from 22:00 to 06:00), the minimum fare is 9 euros, and Rome's own reference ride of 5 km costs 13.10 euros. Termini to the Pantheon is a short ride, so expect about 9 to 13 euros. The first bag is free and each extra large one adds 1 euro. Take only a white taxi with a TAXI roof sign from the rank, and ignore men offering a ride on the platform.
