Termini station: the best way to Rome's historic centre for four people
Four people on the metro pay 6 euros in total and still have a walk at the other end. A taxi to the Pantheon is about 9 to 13 euros for the whole car, so 2 to 3 euros each, and it takes you to the door. A taxi holds four passengers, and a fifth adds a supplement. From two people carrying bags the taxi is almost always the better choice on price and effort. A pre-booked car is not worth it for a trip of 2.5 km.

With 4 travelling, take a taxi: €9–€13 for the group, about 25 min, straight to your door.

- → Pantheon, via Via Nazionale and Via del Corso
Leave by the main front exit, cross Piazza dei Cinquecento and take Via Nazionale downhill to Piazza Venezia, then Via del Corso and the side streets to the Pantheon. It is about 30 minutes with a day bag and 35 with a wheeled case, because the last stretch is cobbled. Via Nazionale is wide and flat enough for a suitcase. The route is straightforward in daylight and fine at night, but it is not the one to choose in rain or heat.

- → Barberini, Spagna (A) or Colosseo (B), then on foot
A single costs 1.50 euros and is valid for 100 minutes on buses and trams as well. You can buy it at the machines or tap a contactless bank card at the gate. Line A takes you to Barberini in two stops or Spagna in three, and it is a 15 to 20 minute walk from either to the Pantheon. Line B reaches Colosseo in two stops. Lines run from 05:30 to 23:30 Sunday to Thursday and until 01:30 on Friday and Saturday nights. Stairs and crowds make it hard with big cases.
BusBus 40 Express and 64

- 40 min
- → Largo Argentina, about 400 m from the Pantheon
Both lines run along Via Nazionale, Piazza Venezia and Corso Vittorio Emanuele and are the classic buses into the old centre. Lines 40 and 64 are among the most crowded and the most targeted by pickpockets in Rome, so keep zips closed and bags in front of you. Metro C works at Piazza Venezia have moved some stops, and the 40 Express has been stopping about 150 m from the old Largo Argentina stop. Check the stop name on the board before you get off. Buy the 1.50 euro ticket before boarding and validate it.

There is no fixed fare inside the walls, so the meter decides. It starts at 3.50 euros on weekdays (5.00 on Saturdays and holidays, 7.50 from 22:00 to 06:00), the minimum fare is 9 euros, and Rome's own reference ride of 5 km costs 13.10 euros. Termini to the Pantheon is a short ride, so expect about 9 to 13 euros. The first bag is free and each extra large one adds 1 euro. Take only a white taxi with a TAXI roof sign from the rank, and ignore men offering a ride on the platform.
Practical tips
- The taxi rank is in front of the station on Piazza dei Cinquecento. Walk to it and ignore anyone who approaches you inside the building.
- The metro entrances are inside the station, signed Metro A and Metro B, on the lower concourse level.
- Left luggage is on the ground floor near platform 24, on the Via Giolitti side, open 07:00 to 21:00, at about 10 euros per bag per day.
- Buses 40 Express and 64 leave from the terminal in front of the station. Hold your bag in front of you, because both lines are pickpocket hot spots.
- Validate a paper ticket as soon as you board. A single costs 1.50 euros and lasts 100 minutes.
- Leaving by the main front exit puts you on Piazza dei Cinquecento, where the bus terminal, the taxi rank and the road to Via Nazionale all start.
